University of Western States Bookstore

Skills:

September 2021 – September 2022

University of Western States is a health sciences university in Portland, Oregon dedicated to the advancement of integrated, patient-centered care. I served as the Bookstore and Café Manager following the University’s relocation.

  • Supervised campus store activities by coordinating, implementing, and evaluating operations and workflow, ensuring consistent high levels of service in the assigned campus store
  • Managed budget and financial transactions for projects, balancing receipts, preparing financial reports, and monitoring expenses, ensuring accuracy and accountability
  • Collaborated with internal teams and external partners to fulfill the bookstore’s mission, acting as the primary contact for communicating and enforcing marketing strategies and policies
  • Resolved disputes and problems by working directly with stakeholders, ensuring customer satisfaction and smooth store operations

Data Collection

In analyzing the store’s data and identifying potential issues, I identified several key challenges:

  • Outdated Course Materials: The textbooks available were either not required for current courses or lacked updated editions. Additionally, some supplies were tied to programs that had been removed from our catalog.
  • Unappealing Merchandise: The apparel and souvenirs offered did not resonate with our target clientele, resulting in low merchandise sales.

Approachable Store Plan

To address the identified issues, I implemented the following steps:

  • Updated Course Materials: Coordinated with the faculty to obtain updated course material lists and restocked the store accordingly.
  • Created a UWS Apparel and Souvenir Concept Booklet: Developed a presentation for upper management to introduce a refreshed line of apparel and souvenirs.
  • Comprehensive Study Materials: Students appreciated our proactive approach in providing study materials for national exams.
  • Efficient Restocking: The frequency of restocking led to negotiations for bulk discounts with suppliers, optimizing our inventory management.

Clear and Concise Design

Developed a User-Friendly Website: Designed an intuitive website to enhance customer accessibility and engagement.

Increased Demand: Enhanced SEO efforts resulted in high demand for specific items, attracting orders from both students and professionals outside the university.
